Registrar and CEO’s Welcome Message
The College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP) welcomes all psychology students, provisionally registered and registered psychologists to the 2022 Annual Meeting and Professional Development Event. CAP is proud to offer this virtual event which I am sure you will find thought provoking, and highly relevant.
This year’s theme is Suicide Risk: Standard of Care for Assessment and Intervention. As many practicing psychologists will encounter clients who express self-harm ideation or are perceived to be at an elevated risk for suicide, it is important to be aware of the current state of research, the underpinnings of foreseeability and the associated professional expectations of reasonable care.
One of the most challenging issues facing psychology, practicing psychologists and a significant proportion of society is addressing and preventing suicide. The human costs—individually, globally, and collaterally—are sobering. They highlight the need to better understand who is at risk and how to mitigate acts of self-harm. Psychologists are identified as having the unique skill sets suited to addressing suicide and to identifying that various populations may be more vulnerable to both mental health challenges and suicide.
We are honoured to have such an esteemed group of speakers this year – we are joined by keynote speaker, Dr. David Jobes of The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, as well as local experts, Dr. Rachel King, Mr. Jonathan Dubue, Mr. Chris Pawluk and Ms. Emily Mack who have agreed to serve as panelists.
Certificates will be issued for those who attend the Professional Development event, and this can be claimed towards your continuing competence hours. The Annual Meeting portion will not be available to put towards continuing competence.
In closing, we are happy once again to offer CAP’s Annual Professional Development event at no charge. This offer is directly related to our public protection mandate. It ensures that psychologists are aware of this standard of care expected when seeing individuals who are at an elevated risk of suicide.
We hope you find this day both informative and useful.
Best wishes,
Dr. Richard Spelliscy, R. Psych.
