Suicide Risk: Standard of Care for Assessment and Intervention.
CAP welcomes all psychology students, provisionally registered and registered psychologists to the 2022 Annual Meeting and Professional Development Event.

This virtual event is free of charge.

President’s Welcome Message

The College of Alberta Psychologists is excited to host the 2022 virtual Annual General Meeting and Professional Development Day for all regulated members who are ethically obligated to practice competently. This year’s topic on suicide is highly salient given that society continues to experience unprecedented stress levels with the continuing global coronavirus pandemic that led to a substantial increase in the number of people experiencing anxiety and depression. There is also increasing social injustices and inequities. Emotionally demanding circumstances, persistent stress, and depression are strong risk factors for suicide.

Suicide, a leading cause of mortality, is a complex behaviour, and certain individuals are at higher risk than others. There is no single cause or explanation available for why people attempt suicide. When someone ends their own life, the impact reverberates throughout families, friends, and entire communities, often long after the event.

Mental health professionals whose clients die by suicide are adversely affected by this loss. There can be a fear of being shunned by colleagues, sued by the family, or being ostracized by the profession. There is also the challenge of facing the difficult emotions of hopelessness, guilt, sadness, and anger.

Managing clients of any age with depression and suicidal risk or attempts is a highly challenging task. If you work with this population, proficiency with evidence-based treatments is critical to address both suicide risk and any underlying mental health concerns. The Professional Development event offers an opportunity to gather and learn from colleagues. While I miss the opportunity to meet in-person with colleagues and presenters, the virtual format makes it more convenient to participate and the sessions are more accessible to our membership. I invite each of you to join us for an informative day of online learning and networking.

Registrar and CEO’s Welcome Message

The College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP) welcomes all psychology students, provisionally registered and registered psychologists to the 2022 Annual Meeting and Professional Development Event. CAP is proud to offer this virtual event which I am sure you will find thought provoking, and highly relevant.

This year’s theme is Suicide Risk: Standard of Care for Assessment and Intervention. As many practicing psychologists will encounter clients who express self-harm ideation or are perceived to be at an elevated risk for suicide, it is important to be aware of the current state of research, the underpinnings of foreseeability and the associated professional expectations of reasonable care.

One of the most challenging issues facing psychology, practicing psychologists and a significant proportion of society is addressing and preventing suicide. The human costs—individually, globally, and collaterally—are sobering. They highlight the need to better understand who is at risk and how to mitigate acts of self-harm. Psychologists are identified as having the unique skill sets suited to addressing suicide and to identifying that various populations may be more vulnerable to both mental health challenges and suicide.

We are honoured to have such an esteemed group of speakers this year – we are joined by keynote speaker, Dr. David Jobes of The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, as well as local experts, Dr. Rachel King, Mr. Jonathan Dubue, Mr. Chris Pawluk and Ms. Emily Mack who have agreed to serve as panelists.

Certificates will be issued for those who attend the Professional Development event, and this can be claimed towards your continuing competence hours. The Annual Meeting portion will not be available to put towards continuing competence.

In closing, we are happy once again to offer CAP’s Annual Professional Development event at no charge. This offer is directly related to our public protection mandate. It ensures that psychologists are aware of this standard of care expected when seeing individuals who are at an elevated risk of suicide.

We hope you find this day both informative and useful.

Best wishes,

Richard Spelliscy

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT EVENT

 1:15pm-2:45pm MT

Keynote Presentation with Dr. David A. Jobes, ABPP

The field of clinical suicidology is rapidly evolving in terms of theory, screening, assessment, management, and treatment related to suicide risk. This presentation will review each of these domains with a particular eye to empirical clinical research. There is increasing evidence that we can effectively identify unique suicidal states that can be effectively managed on an outpatient basis. Distinctions between managing acute states and actually treating suicidal ideation and behaviors (independent of diagnosis) will be explored. Ethical considerations and systems-level considerations will be discussed in relation to providing suicide-focused care in an evidence-based, least-restrictive, and cost-effective manner to help clinically save more lives from suicide.

My question hasn't been answered in this Q&A. How might I satisfy my curiosity?
