The EERI Northern California Regional Chapter and the EERI Learning from Earthquakes Program are co-hosting a FREE webinar on the M6.3 Greece Earthquake of March 3, 2021. The quake struck midday in central Greece and was also felt in neighboring Albania and North Macedonia, and as far north as Kosovo and Montenegro. Rescue teams rushed to extract people from the rubble of buildings that had collapsed in settlements around Tyrnavos, a town close to the tremor’s epicenter (population 12,000). It had a shallow depth of just 5 miles and that was one of the reasons it was felt so strongly. The M6.3 earthquake was followed by a M6.0 the next day, and a M5.6 strong aftershock on March 12. The last time Tyrnavos was struck by such a powerful tremor was more than 250 years ago. The Quick Quake Briefing will present observations on geotechnical and building damage by two individuals that performed field reconnaissance shortly after the quake.
EERI’s professional development webinar series covers a broad range of topics for the community of earthquake risk reduction professionals. You will hear about the latest impacts and lessons from recent earthquakes, learn about emerging research from Earthquake Spectra, and hear from leading experts on complex technical topics.
