This session speaks to social media analysts, researchers and reporters who are examining how breaking news stories like the COVID-19 crisis or Black Lives Matter protests are being used to encourage Black voters not to go to the polls. The social media accounts under examination by this team are the American Descendants of Slavery (ADOS), Candace Owens, Tariq Nasheed and Umar Johnson. According to an investigation conducted by special agent Robert Mueller, in 2016 the Internet Research Agency (IRA) created Facebook and Instagram accounts with names like the “Blacktivist” and “Woke Blacks.” These operatives initially used these accounts to celebrate Black culture and history, but as the presidential election grew closer IRA agents started to suggest Black voters should not go to the polls. This is an act of online voter suppression, a new front in the war to strip African Americans of their constitutional rights to vote. In this session we discuss the groups under investigation, discuss our initial research on their activity and leave journalists with an insight into the impact the COVID-19 pandemic and nationwide Black Lives Matter protests will have on the 2020 election.

This session will explore, with audience participation, the language of protest as crafted and delivered by journalists, media professionals, and other communicators to the public-at-large, and how that content and context determines the narrative that will ultimately define history. The power of the words are unequivocally valued by those who control the distribution of media because history has shown us the transformation from dog-whistles to outright carnival-barking. This has often previously shaped whether a revolution is defined as a riot, and that deliberate editorializing disguised as reporting can and does gravely impact buy-in, support, amplification of a movement versus a moment, and our very lives. It is this critical space for people of the African Diaspora to leverage our media capital and access to strategically identify, contextualize, and where necessary reframe, language, which obliterates a media system that does not fully value our humanity in the portrayal presented in news, stories, and images across all platforms. We must actively dismantle the entrenched systemic racism to guide us to the reformation messaging essential to rebuilding post-rebellion to preserve our humanity in the face of racist structures.

Journalists are told that they leave their personal biases at home and focus on the facts of a story from an objective point of view. At the same time, with political division and racial unrest, many Black journalists are questioning what objectivity means and who it serves. Should journalists leave their identities at the door? Are newsrooms more lenient for movements like #MeToo and #Pride than they are for #BlackLivesMatter?

Not necessarily, some experts say. This panel of managers will offer actionable advice for recent graduates seeking their first positions as well as for more experienced media professionals who have lost their jobs as a result of the pandemic.
