Trauma-Informed and Healing-Centered Engagement for Students in the Wake of the COVID Crisis

Speakers: Katie Peinovich

Description: About 2/3 of children in the US report experiencing at least one traumatic event, such as community or domestic violence, natural disasters, accidents that resulted in serious injury, medical illness, or loss or separation from a caregiver, before the age of 16. Many children also live with ongoing or chronic trauma, like homelessness, caregiver separation, and the pervasive effects of systemic racism. For about 25% of children, their experiences will cause disruption in their everyday functioning. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought rapid and unprecedented changes in the lives of children and families. For children with pre-existing trauma exposure, the combined impact of school closures, disruption to daily life, and the subsequent toll on mental health was particularly devastating.

This workshop will provide an overview of childhood traumatic stress, a discussion of risks posed by COVID-19, and how caregivers and school staff can support children through re-entry to school this fall. Participants will learn definitions and distinctions for acute, complex, and chronic trauma exposure, how it affects thoughts, feelings, and behaviors for kids, teens, and young adults, and when to refer for treatment. The workshop will also include an introduction to the concept of healing-centered engagement, which focuses not only on solutions for the traumatized individual, but also provides a framework for schools to continue to develop as healing communities.

 July 28th, 3PM-4PM EDT

The Resilience Formula: Understanding the Simple Brain Science of Raising Mentally Healthy Kids

Speaker: Donna Volpitta

Description: “Use your brain!” We have all heard it or said it at one point or another, but the problem is, we never teach people how. Right now, we are experiencing mental health issues in teens and young adults, including addiction, anxiety, depression, and suicide, at levels that we have never seen before. But we can turn the tide. The answer lies in some very simple brain science. There are ways that parents and educators may be inadvertently setting children up for difficulties in the future, and there are also things we could be doing or not doing every day to protect our children from going down any of those roads. This session shows how we can make some easy changes to intentionally raise a generation of emotionally healthy kids.

Using National PTA Resolutions and Position Statements to Advocate for Every Child

Speakers: Yvonne Johnson, Cindy Gerhardt

Description: Hear from National PTA’s Vice President of Advocacy and National PTA’s Resolutions Chair on the purposes and processes for developing and implementing these documents. Learn about recently adopted position statements and resolutions and how you can use them in to be a better advocate for all children. Both are instrumental in framing state and national public policy priorities, educating decision makers and moving the needle on crucial topics and issues that impact our children and families. We will discuss the differences in the two types of measures, as well as the impact they have made in amplifying our voice when the need has arisen.
