David R. Squires, a journalism instructor at N.C. A&T State University, has dedicated much of his career to coverage of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. He currently writes mainly on HBCU topics as a contributing writer for ESPN’s The Undefeated, but Squires was also editor-in-chief of Tribune Company’s BlackVoices.com and Black Voices Quarterly. BVQ was a magazine dedicated exclusively to HBCUs. Squires first began covering HBCUs, mostly Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman, in the early 80s at the St. Petersburg Times (now the Tampa Bay Times). In addition, Squires was night managing editor at TheSportingNews.com, and he has served as an editor at the New York Times, Newsday, the Detroit Free Press, Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Charlotte Observer, and others.
