Takeda Pharmaceuticals
Charlotte D. Owens, M.D., FACOG, is the Head of the R&D Center for Health Equity and Patient Affairs, which is comprised of Centers of Excellence (COE) that collectively build on the Chief Medical Office’s holistic and inclusive, end-to-end patient-focused approach, within R&D. These COEs are dedicated to global health equity, equitable access to meaningful therapeutic options and improved diagnosis. Previously, Dr. Owens was the Therapeutic Area Lead in U.S. Medical Affairs for Women’s Health at AbbVie where she oversaw the therapeutic area’s scientific communications, field medical science liaison team, clinical trials, educational efforts, and publications. As a Senior Medical Director in Clinical Development at AbbVie, she led the direction, planning, execution and interpretation of clinical trials in women’s health including the uterine fibroid research portfolio. This work included the largest uterine fibroid Phase 3 program, which successfully enrolled and retained nearly 800 women – roughly two-thirds of whom were African American women – a group that is typically underrepresented in research but disproportionally impacted by this disease. Her landmark clinical research program resulted in the first oral treatment option specifically indicated for the treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding associated with uterine fibroids. Dr. Owens is also a board-certified Obstetrician-Gynecologist and an Adjunct Assistant Clinical Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Morehouse School of Medicine
