Janell Ross

Janell Ross is a senior correspondent covering race and identities for TIME. Her journalism has carried datelines from about two dozen states as she’s explored issues of social justice, equity, and intolerance at major outlets. At NBC News Digital, Janell covered race and politics and helped to prepare questions for the final presidential debate, which included the first ever question put to candidates about environmental racism. Janell previously covered race and demographic change as a national reporter at The Washington Post, and spent a year at The Huffington Post exploring the near absence of economic recovery in Black America. From 2006 to 2011, Janell worked as an immigration reporter at the Tennessean and contributed to the paper’s coverage of a devastating flood, which ranked among the finalists for the Pulitzer Prize in breaking news reporting. A Texas native, Janell is a graduate of Vassar College and Columbia University.
