The 1985 Yates High School Football Team
Honorees
Houston, Texas
Regarded by many Texans as the best high school football team in the football-frenzied state, the 1985 Yates team stood out for several reasons. They finished the season undefeated in dominant fashion with a 37-0 beatdown against renowned state power Odessa Permian, which was the worst blowout of a large school classification state final in 27 years. More than half of the team’s seniors went on to play college football and according to the Houston Chronicle, at least two-thirds would earn their degree with at least five playing in the NFL.”We were loaded,” Maurice Hobson, a junior on that team, told the Houston Chronicle. How good were they? Santana Dotson was a junior on the 1985 Yates football team and came off the bench that season. He would go on to enjoy a decade in the NFL, which included being named the league’s Defensive Rookie of the Year in 1992.
