Dr. Valerie Marcano is the co-founder of Pawsibilities, a nonprofit that aims to increase recruitment and retention of underrepresented groups to the veterinary profession. Dr. Marcano received a Bachelor of Science at Cornell University, and her DVM and PhD degrees from the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. Valerie’s PhD focused on vaccination strategies for Newcastle disease. During her time at UGA, Valerie served on the executive board of the national and UGA’s chapter of Veterinarians as One Inclusive Community for Empowerment (VOICE) for six years. She also co-founded the Swine, Aquaculture and Poultry Food Animal Club and served in multiple roles in committees and the board of directors of the American Association of Avian Pathologists (AAAP).
Currently, Valerie is a poultry veterinarian in North and South Carolina. She is also the chair of the first ever Diversity and Inclusion Committee of the AAAP and a member of the AVMA and AAVMC’s Commission for a Diverse, Equitable, and Inclusive Veterinary Profession.
